  3. Rescan is a Second Sight utility which will scan the entire message base
  4. and export all messages in selected public net sections to a text file
  5. which is close in format -- but *not* an exact match -- to the Tabby
  6. Generic file. It is designed to be used to bring a new BBS up to date
  7. with messages from an older board, or to reconstruct sections from a
  8. stable board to a board which has suffered a calamity. The board
  9. receiving Rescanned messages must process them with a utility called
  10. Rescanalotor to turn the text file into proper Second Sight messages.

  12. Here is a step by step description of how to use Rescan and Rescanalator:

  14. To create the Generic Rescan file...
  15.  
  16.     • Copy Rescan to the Tabby root level of your BBS. 
  17.     
  18.     • Run Rescan. It will display all entries from Tabby's areas.bbs file
  19.     in a scrolling list. Select from 1 to 25 sections to Rescan. The
  20.     Shift key allows you to drag-select multiple sections in a sequence.
  21.     The Command key lets you select non-continuous sections. When you
  22.     have selected sections to rescan, double click one of the sections
  23.     and let Rescan do its stuff. 
  24.     
  25.     • Rescan will display a progress indicator while it creates a file
  26.     called Generic Rescan in your Generic folder. (If a file called
  27.     Generic Rescan already exists there, the new Rescan is appended to
  28.     it.) When Rescan is finished, click the Done button, then choose Quit
  29.     from the File menu.

  31.     • Send the Generic Rescan text file to the board which will use it.

  33. To process the Generic Rescan file...
  34.  
  35.     • Copy Rescanalator to the Tabby root level of your BBS. 
  36.     
  37.     • Put the Generic Rescan file in the Generic folder. 
  38.     
  39.     • Run Rescanalator.

  41.     • Run TImport or an equivalent importing utility.

  45. The only difference between Generic Rescan and the Tabby Generic file
  46. format as defined by Michael Connick is that line 2 (Category Number) of
  47. each message does not contain a three-digit number, since that is a
  48. variable from board to board. Instead, line 2 contains a flag symbol
  49. consisting of •| (bullet+vertical bar) and then the areas.bbs name of the
  50. section. Rescanalator is a filter which first reads the local areas.bbs
  51. file, then reads Generic Rescan line by line until it comes to a line
  52. beginning with •|. This line is replaced by the proper Category Number from
  53. the areas.bbs file. The filtered file is named Generic Import and the
  54. Generic Rescan file is deleted by Rescanalator.
